Two UK service men were killed ( summary )

Two UK servicemen were killed by "friendly fire" in Afghanistan when they were hit by an anti-tank missile attack ordered by a Danish colleague, Captain Tom Sawyer, 26, from Hertfordshire, and Cpl Danny Winter, 28, of Stock port, died in the explosion in central Hellman in January 2009. The pair were killed on a rooftop close to Forward Operation Base Gibraltar. Coroner David Ripley said a Danish army lieutenant had ordered the strike. The coroner explained that the British forces had been involved in a joint operation with a Danish battle group. Maj Taylor said the Danish officer who ordered the firing would not have been trained in its use. He said the weapon was not "user-friendly" to those who were not trained. In a statement released after his death, Captain Sawyer's family paid tribute to him as "our hero. Captain Sawyer was serving with 7 (Sphinx) Commando Battery, 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. He was in Helmand province deployed on operations as a fire support team commander attached to Zulu Company, 45 Commando Royal Marines. He is survived by his wife Katy, who he married in March 2008, his parents Martyn and Susan and Sister Wendy , Cpl Winter, 28, from Stockport, Cheshire, was a specialist mortar fire controller and was serving in Helmand province with the mortar troop of Zulu Company, 45 Commando Royal Marines.
